Undescended Testis
An undescended testis is one that has failed to
complete its normal passage from within the abdomen to the scrotum.
Undescended testis is found in about 1% of premature male babies.
Usually, only one testis fails to descend. Most undescended testes
descend within a few months of birth but rarely, if ever, descend
after this time. Such cases are associated with impaired
spermatogenesis, although the extent of impairment may vary from
complete arrest of spermatogenesis to only a slight reduction in
the number of germ cells. Undescended testis may be surgically
corrected but the chance of restoring normal fertility is
low.
